Composite fillings, otherwise known as tooth-colored fillings, are used when a tooth has been affected by decay or trauma. During the process, the affected area of the tooth is removed and then filled. At 32 Dental in Kennesaw, GA, we use composite resin fillings because they are strong, safe, and natural-looking.
There are many different types of filling materials available: amalgam, gold, porcelain, and composite resin. We use composite resin fillings because they are metal-free and biocompatible. They can be color-matched to your natural teeth making them a more aesthetically appealing solution than gold or silver fillings.
Composite resin fillings can be placed in a single appointment. We begin by using local anesthetic to numb the area. Once the area is sufficiently numb, we remove any damaged structure and then clean the area before placing the filling material. For a deep cavity close to the nerve of the tooth, we may use special medication to keep the area protected.
Once the area is ready, the composite filling is placed directly in the tooth and hardened with a special light. It can then be shaped and polished to restore the shape and function of the tooth.
It’s important to know that sensitivity to hot or cold is common after a composite filling is placed. This will go away once the tooth adapts to the filling.
While composite fillings are extremely durable and can last for many years with proper oral care, they may need to be replaced over time. If you are in the Kennesaw, GA area and would like to learn more about composite resin fillings, call 32 Dental today at (770) 423-1132.
